New advanced slag
optimization technology for electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production |
|
Louisville, KY, April 9, 2009. Carbide
Industries LLC and NuFlux, LLC have formed a technical partnership for
the commercial implementation of a new advanced slag optimization technology
for electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production. According to Dr. Frank Kemeny,
Vice President of Technology for NuFlux, LLC, the technology involves making
timed additions of calcium carbide together with optimally proportioned slag
making and slag foaming additives, into the EAF during the steel melting and
refining operation. The use of calcium carbide as an alternative energy
source, provides improved furnace efficiency, increased furnace productivity,
reduced costs and a lower carbon footprint of the EAF process. Mr. John Gant, General Manager of Carbide
Industries LLC, said "this technology has been under development for
several years and is now ready for commercial implementation. Our
announcement comes at a time when the US steel sector is under pressure and
is actively seeking ways to maximize process efficiency and reduce its
costs". For further information, please
